artcommune gallery proudly presents New Traditions: Cheong Soo Pieng and The Pioneering of Singapore Modern Art.
Cheong Soo Pieng (1917-1983) is widely regarded as a trailblazing figure in the early Singapore Art Scene and among the most creative Chinese artists of the 20th century. During his time, Soo Pieng’s highly inventive and stylised visual language was closely studied and emulated by scores of artists and students in Singapore and Malaysia. With over 15 early works by the pioneer master on view, our curated showcase reflects Cheong Soo Pieng’s fervent amalgamation of Western and Chinese pictorial styles in the period of 1950s-1960s. . Held at the inaugural edition of S.E.A. Focus, Singapore’s boutique art fair, this exhibition provides a broad survey of his pioneering effort in the Nanyang art style, which marries pictorial techniques of European Modern art such as Fauvism and Cubism with distinctly Malayan or Southeast Asian subjects and themes.
