Exhibition + Talk [artcommune] - The Abstract Journey of Cheong Soo Pieng
June 7, 2018
"The Abstract Journey of Cheong Soo Pieng" presents over 15 works in the oil and mixed media by revered pioneer artist Cheong Soo Pieng. Born in 1917 in Xiamen, China, Soo Pieng relocated to Singapore in 1946. He taught at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) before becoming a full-time artist in 1961. Over a career that spanned five decades, he established a wide-ranging repertoire of styles and mediums that influenced scores of artists and art students in Singapore. After a life-changing sojourn in Europe from 1961 to 1963, Soo Pieng’s oeuvre between the 1960s and 1970s took on a broad range of themes and expressions, resulting in several distinct and stylised abstract series. Representative works from this period will be on showcase to reflect his rich, evolving journey in the abstract realm.
In addition to the exhibition, artcommune gallery will also be conducting a talk titled "Introduction to Cheong Soo Pieng" on the 28th of June 2018 (Thursday), 7 - 9.30 pm. The talk is ticketed at SGD $25 per pax and seeks to share interesting insights into Cheong Soo Pieng's life and art, highlighting artistic themes on the artist and his prolific practice.
